A TRIBUTE TO GABY CATAFAGO

Gaby Catafago passed away on September 16th 2010 in Alexandria, Egypt.

And we are here today to honor that man and remember the legacy that he left behind. Gaby was a gentleman in the true sense of the word.

He was kind hearted, loving, respectful, a leader, but most of all a winner.

His exploits on the basket ball court go back to 1947 when he was first selected to the Egyptian National Basket Ball Team to play in the Euro Basket Championship. They won the Bronze Medal. In 1949 they won the Gold Medal Beating France in the Final. In 1951 they took part in the Mediterranean Games in Alexandria and won the Gold Medal.

Gaby was a member of the Egyptian National team from 1947 to 1959.

In 1954 he was drafted as an officer along with Roro Sabounghi and George Chalhoub to participate with National Team at the World Military Championship in Amsterdam. They came second losing to the United States by two points.

Gaby retired from playing the game that he dearly loved in 1959, after an illustrious career. Not to mention the many Championships won with the College Saint-Marc in International, National and local competitions between the periods of 1947 to 1959.

Gaby was a model player on the court, we never saw him upset, argue or contest a call, he was always respectful and we have all learned to be like him.

He was a role model to all of us, a teacher, a motivator and a friend.

In closing I would like to mention a final thought. All of us that grew up in Egypt especially in our beloved Alexandria at that time. We all attended private schools, we received the best education money can buy, we all became successful. All our
School friends were of mixed nationalities and mixed religions, we all got along as a family, we never questioned the race, religion or affiliation of anybody. We celebrated ALL religious holidays together. This is the spirit of our upbringing and of AAHA California. Please let’s continue to keep that spirit alive.

To prove what I said, I would like to mention the names of our Internationals that have represented Egypt with honor and dignity, in which we are all grateful for their contribution, efforts and sacrifices. Here they are:

the Captain of our National Team Albert Tadros, from Club Al Gezira, Cairo and his team mates Hussein Montasser, Youssef Abou Hoff, Medhat Youssif, Sami Chelbaya, Adel Sabri. And how about those great players from the Maccabi of Cairo that made part of our National team the famous Zouzi Harari, Joe Zacar, Guido Acher, Maurice Calife.

From Alexandria the great defensive player Fouad Aboul Kheir.

From College Saint-Marc: Robert Makzoumé, Gaby Catafago, Roro Sabounghi, George Chalhoub, Sami Mansour, Elie Araman and Magdi Rizgallah.

Thank you for those wonderful memories, we were truly proud of our national heroes, you will always remain in our heart.

Good bye Gaby may your soul rest in peace, gone but never forgotten.
